Did the moon shining on the surface of the water
lose all its meaning
when you messaged me on Instagram the other day?
It both does and doesn't feel that way.

I knew that I didn't like
the way you minimized my experience
the life that I base my research on.
But I also knew that I liked being seen,
as someone rational, and thoughtful,
someone who wasn't afraid to learn, and to listen.

I didn't need to prove anything to you.
But I liked holding your hand,
and I liked listening to you talk,
and I liked the way our conversations had depth.

Sometimes I forget that we have all had microcosmic experiences.
Actually, I never forget that. Sometimes what I really forget
is that our experiences are only a small representation
of the self that we are as a whole.
So that it's possible for you to be two people:
the one who made me feel like a mind and a body
and the one who said he was embarrassed he slept with me
when I didn't agree with ignorant comments online.
